Clarity Counseling Associates was started by Lauren Lowenthal in 2017, but her counseling expertise developed from many years of helping corporations implement large-scale change and manage the impact on their employees.
About Me
Lauren Lowenthal, MS, LMHC
I am a Washington State Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with a Master’s degree in Counseling from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. I bring diverse experience from both college counseling and community mental health environments. I have had the opportunity to deal with broad ranging client issues including academic and career concerns, and life transitions, mood and anxiety disorders, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, substance abuse, trauma, and personality disorders. In addition, I have worked with clients who have severe chronic mental illness.
I have a particular passion for career-related issues such as job/loss, work/life balance, second careers, and re-entry into the workforce. I am keenly interested in working with women on barriers related to poor self-esteem and fear of change that often inhibit goal attainment both personally and professionally. In addition, I help clients who, like me, are introverts, learn to appreciate this aspect of their personality.
Approach
In working with clients, I employ a client-centered, humanistic approach which I consider the foundation for my work. I use this approach because it resonates with my belief that individuals generally have the potential to actively choose and pursue their goals if they are determined and supported. However, because each client is unique and presents with her or her own specific needs and concerns, I may overlay different therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral, dialectical behavioral, solution-focused, or EMDR.
Background
I am a native New Yorker and lived most of my life on the East Coast. You can easily tell me apart from someone born and raised in WA state because I use an umbrella when it rains.
I came to the counseling profession following a 20 plus year career in corporate human resources and organizational consulting. My goal in choosing that profession was to make the workplace more “humane.” I quickly came to find that solving world hunger might have been an easier pursuit. I did however find my work to be most enjoyable and rewarding when I was helping staff develop themselves. That drew me to executive coaching (enjoyed the coaching, but not executives) and finally counseling. I now work as a mental health counselor and life coach.
Food For Thought
I created the following “verse” for a homework assignment in my first counseling class in graduate school. I came upon it recently and thought I’d share it with you:
“The verse I will contribute will not rhyme because life is rarely that smooth or predictable…that said:
Know yourself and be guided by your passions, because ultimately, you need to live your life and not someone else’s.
Pay attention to all aspects of your life because without balance you won’t have harmony.
Take time to ask yourself, ‘Am I really happy? Am I stepping into who I’m meant to be?’ Remember that it is never too late to make a change as long as you have the passion and determination.
Be open to things different from yourself and your preferences: people, culture, art, music, cuisine, and the like.
Keep the child in you; don’t be afraid to giggle, talk to stuffed animals and watch cartoons if you feel the urge.
Be courageous.
Be yourself.
Start now!”
