Depression & Anxiety Therapy

Occasional anxiety is an expected part of life. You might feel anxious when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision. But anxiety disorders involve more than temporary worry or fear. For a person with an anxiety disorder, the anxiety does not go away and can worsen over time. The symptoms can interfere with daily activities such as job performance, school work, and relationships.

There are several types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and various phobia-related disorders such as social phobia.

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn’t worth living.

More than just a bout of the blues, depression isn’t a weakness and you can’t simply “snap out” of it.

Many people with anxiety also develop depression and vice versa. Roughly 50% of people diagnosed with depression with also be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. However, it’s important to get an accurate diagnosis in order to treat the correct conditions.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that helps clients heal from trauma and emotional distress. Through EMDR clients can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. EMDR shows that the mind can heal from psychological trauma just as the body recovers from physical trauma. When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. Just as the body can heal itself naturally, so can the mind. However, if it is blocked by the impact of a traumatic event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. Using a structured process, an EMDR therapist can help clients activate their natural healing processes.

In addition to its use for the treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, EMDR has successfully been used to treat: Anxiety and Panic Attacks, Depression, Phobias, Complicated Grief, Addictions, Pain Relief, and Self-Esteem.

Workplace and Career Counseling

Research has shown that the average person spends 90,000 hours or the equivalent of roughly one-third of one’s total life working.  Whether this number may be under or overinflated, it is still a large number. Research also shows that unhappiness at work can be expensive. The American Psychological Association estimates that 550 million workdays are lost each year due to stress on the job. A significant part of my work involves helping employees deal with workplace challenges such as having a difficult supervisor and not knowing how to best communicate with them.  Other times, it may be work/life balance you are seeking, particularly if you work from home, but don’t have a clue as to how to achieve it. We will work on areas such as communication strategies and boundary setting.

I also helps clients explore new career venues if that is something you are considering.  And I do know something about career change having had (at least) three distinct careers (not jobs, but ‘careers’) in my lifetime!

Women's Issues

Anxiety and burnout can quietly erode your confidence, especially when you are capable, educated, and used to handling things on your own. You may look successful yet feel stuck, unsure of your decisions, and exhausted from putting everyone else first. If self doubt and fear of change are keeping you from thriving, therapy can help you move forward.

Many of the women I work with are in their mid 30s to 70s. They are thoughtful, curious, and often professionally accomplished, yet struggle with anxiety, depression, low self worth or burnout. They may be introverted, overly accommodating, or stuck in work situations beneath their abilities. They want growth, clarity, and the courage to prioritize themselves.

If you are ready to stop people pleasing, communicate more confidently, and create work life balance that reflects your abilities, let’s talk.
