Depression & Anxiety Therapy

Occasional anxiety is an expected part of life. You might feel anxious when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision. But anxiety disorders involve more than temporary worry or fear. For a person with an anxiety disorder, the anxiety does not go away and can worsen over time. The symptoms can interfere with daily activities such as job performance, school work, and relationships.

There are several types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and various phobia-related disorders.

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn’t worth living.

More than just a bout of the blues, depression isn’t a weakness and you can’t simply “snap out” of it.

Many people with anxiety also develop depression and vice versa. Roughly 50% of people diagnosed with depression with also be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. However, it’s important to get an accurate diagnosis in order to treat the correct conditions.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables clients to heal from trauma and emotional distress resulting from traumatic life experiences. Research has show that with a trained EMDR therapist, clients can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. EMDR shows that the mind can heal from psychological trauma just as the body recovers from physical trauma. When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. Just as the body can heal itself naturally, so can the mind. However, if it is blocked by the impact of a traumatic event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. Using a structured process, an EMDR therapist can help clients activate their natural healing processes.

In addition to its use for the treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, EMDR has successfully been used to treat: Anxiety and Panic Attacks, Depression, Phobias, Complicated Grief, Addictions, Pain Relief, and Self-Esteem.

Managing Transition

Benjamin Franklin said there were only two things certain in life: death and taxes. I would add a third certainty: change. Change is difficult for most people; even positive change can stir up anxious feelings in us. But change can also be freeing, exhilarating and something to be embraced. How we deal with change either strengthens us or reduces our ability to have a happy, successful and healthy life.
